Pastel Beach Huts Row

This photograph shows a row of brightly coloured beach huts at Southwold on the Suffolk coast.

The huts are arranged in a neat line, each with its own vivid colour—mint green, pink, pale blue, turquoise, deep blue, orange and violet—and each has a simple central window and pitched roof. They stand behind a low concrete sea wall, with an expansive, almost completely empty car park stretching across the foreground.

The image has a clean, minimalist feel. The high-key lighting and very pale sky and pavement make the saturated colours of the huts particularly striking. The regular spacing, repeated shapes and horizontal lines create a strong sense of rhythm, while the absence of people gives the scene a quiet, almost graphic quality.
