Sizewell Cooling Towers

This photograph depicts the skeletal remains of the former Sizewell cooling towers standing offshore, transformed into stark industrial monuments against a vast seascape.
The composition is dominated by two rusting steel structures rising from the water. The larger framework occupies the right side of the frame, while a smaller remnant appears far in the distance to the left, creating a sense of depth and scale. Their geometric latticework contrasts sharply with the soft, flowing textures of sea and sky.
A long exposure has smoothed the incoming waves into sweeping bands of pale cream and grey, lending the water an almost painterly quality. The sea appears calm yet restless, with subtle streaks leading the viewer’s eye toward the structures. Above, heavy storm clouds gather across the sky, their dark blue-grey tones suggesting unsettled weather and adding drama to the scene.
The muted palette—soft whites, sandy browns, pale blues, and steel greys—creates a restrained, atmospheric mood. The industrial remnants seem isolated and vulnerable amid the expansive coastal landscape, evoking themes of decay, memory, and the passage of time. What were once functional components of a major engineering project now stand as haunting relics, gradually being reclaimed by the sea.
The overall effect is both serene and melancholic: a meeting of industry and nature rendered through minimalist composition and the softening influence of long-exposure photography.
