Stormy Pier, Cromer
This is a dramatic black-and-white long-exposure photograph of Cromer Pier on the north Norfolk coast.
The pier stretches horizontally into the North Sea from the centre-right, its delicate structure contrasting with the heavy sky. Rough, blurred water fills the foreground. The long exposure turns the breaking waves into soft, almost mist-like ribbons, giving the sea a dreamlike quality. Dark, brooding clouds dominate the upper half of the frame, with brighter gaps of light breaking through around the horizon and above the pier. On the right-hand side, Cromer’s shoreline rises into a seawall and buildings, providing a solid counterweight to the fluid sea. The monochrome treatment creates a striking range of deep blacks, silvery greys and bright highlights, emphasizing the contrast between the turbulent sky and luminous water.
Overall, it has a moody, atmospheric and almost cinematic character—the slow shutter speed makes Cromer’s familiar seaside landscape feel timeless and slightly otherworldly.
